Review problems

When a former customer leaves a review

The relationship ending does not make the review removable, but it often changes what is inside it.

Most reviews from former customers are simply complaints: about a fee, a job, a wait or the way something ended. That is opinion, and it will stay.

What changes after a relationship ends is the tone and the content. A business dispute that moves into allegations, names or private messages is a different kind of problem, and one with a policy answer.

Usually protected

These are the reviews we most often have to decline, and it is worth knowing why.

  • "Overpriced, slow and I would not use them again" from a real client
  • A fee dispute described in ordinary customer language
  • A complaint about how a job, a sale or a tenancy was handled, however one-sided
  • A review written after a disagreement about a refund, where the account is factually accurate

Where it can become reportable

The ending of the relationship frequently pushes reviews across a policy line.

  • A specific allegation of crime, fraud or theft, which is checkable against your records
  • Content naming or attacking a member of staff or another customer
  • Publishing private messages, addresses, account numbers or records
  • Repeated posting after you stop engaging, which becomes harassment
  • A review from a director, relative or colleague of the client who never dealt with you

How to respond

The reply matters more than usual here, because the exchange is over and the audience is entirely prospective.

  • Close the loop professionally: acknowledge, state your process, invite a private conversation
  • Do not relitigate the history in public, and do not reference their new supplier
  • Keep every record: if a claim in the review is later disproved, that reopens the case

Questions we get asked

No. The relationship existed, so their account of it is protected unless the wording itself breaches a policy category.

It can. Repeated posting of the same complaint is one of the markers Google treats as harassment, and it is worth documenting the dates of each one.

It can be, since that is a factual allegation of dishonesty rather than an opinion. Send the review and the contract, payment and completion records and we will assess it.
