Review problems

Why Google keeps a negative review up

Because in most cases, keeping it is what the policy says to do.

Google's review system is built to protect the customer's account of an experience, even a bad-tempered or one-sided one. Removal is the exception, not the default.

Understanding that line saves businesses from paying for a case that cannot succeed, so this page sets it out plainly.

The core reason: opinion is not a policy breach

A review can be harsh, personal in tone, exaggerated or simply wrong about the facts as you know them and still comply with Google's policies.

  • "Rude staff and a terrible job" is opinion, and protected
  • "This company stole my deposit" is a factual allegation, and can be challenged
  • A one-star rating with no text at all is almost never removable

The other reasons

When a review clearly breaches policy, refusals usually come from the report rather than the content.

  • The report described the harm rather than the rule that was broken
  • No evidence was provided on the decisive question
  • The report was filed under a category that does not match the content
  • The reviewer has been removed already, and the review with them

What actually works

Take the review apart for policy breaches: is it about your business, does it name a person, does it come from someone with a stake, does it contain illegal or harassing content?

  • Report on the strongest single breach, not a list of grievances
  • Attach the one document that contradicts a factual claim
  • Expect the decision to be Google's, and never guaranteed

Questions we get asked

Only where the falsehood is a specific, checkable factual claim that you can disprove, and where it also breaches a policy category. "False" on its own is not enough.

Not by itself. Anonymous accounts are common. What matters is the content and the reviewer's relationship to your business.

Yes, a short factual reply is worth having for future readers, and it does not harm your report. Keep it brief and do not argue with the reviewer.
