Review problems
How to protect your Google reputation
Most protection is groundwork: a complete profile, secured access, and a review flow that cannot be gamed.
Reputation problems are usually preventable in three places: who controls your profile, how reviews are gathered, and whether you notice a change early.
None of it is exotic. It is a short checklist, run consistently, and it makes the difference between one bad week and a lasting shift in your rating.

- Honest check before you pay
- Most cases decided in 24 to 72 hours
- Full refund if Google keeps it up
Own and secure the profile
The most common avoidable problem we see is access. Businesses hand profile management to an agency or a member of staff, and the account ends up in the wrong hands.
- Keep owner access on a business account you control, not a personal or contractor account
- Remove manager access when an agency, freelancer or staff member leaves
- Confirm the address, categories, hours and services are accurate: a wrong detail invites off-topic reviews
Build a review flow that cannot be gamed
Genuine volume is the strongest protection there is, and how you ask matters both for policy and for credibility.
- Ask everyone, at the natural moment: on completion, at collection, at renewal
- Never offer discounts, gifts or entries into a prize for a review: incentivised reviews breach Google's policies
- Do not gate requests to happy customers only, and never post reviews on a customer's behalf
Watch for early signals
A problem that is spotted in week one is far easier to handle than one discovered in month six.
- Check the profile monthly, and in an incognito window, since cached views can differ from what the public sees
- Note new negative reviews in a dated log as they arrive
- Treat a cluster of new accounts, or the same accounts touching several local businesses, as a signal rather than bad luck
Questions we get asked
Yes, if the profile was created or claimed under someone else's account, including an agency's or a former employee's. It is worth checking who holds owner access before a problem occurs.
Asking is encouraged. What is prohibited is incentivising reviews, writing them yourself, reviewing your own business, or asking staff and family to post on your behalf.
Check your profile details first, since the review may be describing a misunderstanding your listing caused. If the content is genuinely unrelated to your business, it may be reportable as off-topic.
